Difference of treatment
If certain conditions are met, migrants will gain access to social aid, medical aid, a bank account etc. However, foreigners can be subjected to unfair treatment from authorities and companies relative to regular citizens. Such treatment has an even worse impact on foreigners who already live in poverty.
Access to economic and social rights
Some measures, often taken in response to austerity, can threaten the social and economic rights of migrants. This is case with social aid for EU citizens or migrants’ access to a bank account. The fee for foreigners, which covers a series of administrative tasks, also acts as a financial barrier for many migrants.
